Wates Construction/SES Engineering Services
In my role at Wates/SES, I support the Regional Technical Director in delivering the engineering management strategy by undertaking various technical management tasks. These tasks involve creating and identifying value engineering and management proposals, conducting technical reviews of major packages, plant, and equipment, and verifying site installations against the design. I also engage in work winning and am responsible for allocated tasks on regional bids and cost plans, including customer and MEP Consultant engagements, while creating specific bid-winning themes to give Wates/SES a competitive advantage.
Wheatley’s Mechanical & Electrical Services Ltd
At Wheatley’s, I managed the design team and was responsible for mechanical and electrical services design. I negotiated commercial deals with suppliers, participated in the tendering process, and engaged with clients to secure future work. My role was rewarding, and I appreciated the respect I received from all members of the organisation.
Qatar Kentz/SNC-Lavalin Group
During my tenure at Qatar Kentz, I played a pivotal role in the SIDRA Hospital project, a large-scale and complex undertaking. My responsibilities included managing and delegating engineering design work, which involved producing detailed reports, sizing plant equipment, checking design drawings, and raising equipment orders. I developed and implemented Excel-based schedules for monitoring programs, which significantly improved workload management and priority assignment. One of the key challenges was providing engineering solutions within the constraints of the site, which required innovative thinking and problem-solving skills. I collaborated with a diverse team of engineers from various backgrounds, which enriched my experience and broadened my professional network. In addition to my engineering duties, I took the initiative to enroll in computer programming courses during my evenings. This new skill set allowed me to develop a dynamic psychometric chart calculator using Microsoft Excel Visual Basics and Python programming languages. This tool proved extremely useful in producing accurate and efficient reports on engineering solutions for the project.
Wheatley’s Mechanical & Electrical Services Ltd
During my time at Wheatley’s Mechanical & Electrical Services Ltd, I was responsible for delivering mechanical design for a diverse range of projects, including universities, warehouses, factories, museums, schools, and hotels. As the lead mechanical design engineer, I took full responsibility for the mechanical design aspects of each project, ensuring that all designs met the required standards and specifications.
Martin Design
At Martin Design, I was headhunted to join the team and supported through the first year of my degree. My role involved working on a variety of mechanical design projects, where I gained significant experience and knowledge in the field. During my time at Martin Design, I became proficient in using Autodesk Revit, a leading software in the industry for building information modeling (BIM). I attended several courses to enhance my skills, including Daikin air source heat pump courses, which provided me with a deeper understanding of renewable energy systems. In addition to my design work, I also gained insight into the consultancy side of the industry. Overall, my time at Martin Design was a period of significant professional growth. I developed a strong foundation in mechanical design, gained valuable experience with industry-standard software, and enhanced my understanding of renewable energy systems. This role helped shape my career and provided me with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the building services engineering industry.
LNT Construction
At LNT Construction, I was entrusted with significant responsibilities, including the design, sourcing, commissioning, and management of mechanical systems for various projects. My role primarily focused on renewable energy systems, where I designed and implemented solutions such as solar thermal, solar photovoltaics, air source heat pumps, and ground source heat pumps. This experience greatly enhanced my product knowledge within the industry and allowed me to establish excellent relationships with many manufacturers and suppliers. One of the key projects I worked on was the design of mechanical systems for care homes. These projects required meticulous planning and coordination to ensure that all systems were efficient, reliable, and met the specific needs of the facilities. I took full responsibility for the mechanical design, from initial concept through to final implementation, ensuring that all designs adhered to industry standards and client requirements. In addition to care homes, I was involved in several special developments, including the design of the chairman’s new home. This project included the design of both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, which presented unique challenges and required innovative solutions. My ability to manage these complex projects demonstrated my technical expertise and project management skills.
LJ Monks Building Services Ltd
At LJ Monks Building Services Ltd, I joined the company at a junior level but quickly progressed to an intermediate level, taking on new responsibilities and expanding my skill set. My role involved producing detailed mechanical designs for a variety of projects, including schools, student accommodation, office buildings, car parks, hotels, care homes, theatres, and swimming pools. This diverse range of projects allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of mechanical building services and the specific requirements of different types of buildings. One of my key responsibilities was to effectively utilise Hevacomp software to produce accurate calculations that coincided with my designs. Although software tools were available, I often preferred to use design methods that I had learned during my academic period, ensuring a thorough understanding of the underlying principles. This approach allowed me to create efficient and value-engineered building services designs that met the needs of our clients.
Floorwarming UK/Encompas Ltd
At Floorwarming UK/Encompas Ltd, I played a multifaceted role that encompassed design, estimating, and contract engineering. My primary focus was on heating systems within both domestic and commercial buildings, where I developed a deep understanding of underfloor heating systems and renewable energy solutions. In my design capacity, I was responsible for creating detailed plans and specifications for underfloor heating systems. This involved selecting appropriate materials and components, ensuring that all designs met the required standards and client specifications. As an estimating engineer, I prepared detailed cost estimates for projects, which included material costs, labor, and other associated expenses. In my role as a contract engineer, I managed the installation and commissioning of underfloor heating and heat pump systems.
F Shaw & Co. Ltd
I began my career in building services as an apprentice at F Shaw & Co. Ltd, where I gained hands-on experience in various aspects of ventilation design and contract management. My role involved contributing to the design, quotation, and commissioning of ventilation systems for a range of projects, including police stations, supermarkets, hospitals, and hotels. One of the significant projects I worked on was the large-scale Safeways to Wm Morrisons revamp project.
